Jerusalem, 15 October, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Israel is overhauling the joint unit operated by the Israel Police and the Israel Defense Forces to combat a surge in weapons and ammunition theft from military bases.
Stolen military equipment has increasingly found its way into the hands of criminal organizations, fueling violent crime and raising concerns that weapons could also reach terrorist operatives.
The problem has intensified during the war, as large quantities of military equipment have been deployed across operational areas, creating additional opportunities for theft.
The new measures aim to strengthen coordination between the police and military investigators, improve intelligence sharing, and enhance the ability to trace stolen weapons and ammunition. The initiative reflects growing pressure on security agencies to close gaps in military-base security and prevent military-grade weapons from reaching the black market.
