Jerusalem, 16 October, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Fifty-eight judges from Israel’s district and magistrate courts and labor tribunals have retired early since the current government took office in January 2023, according to Israeli media reports. Court system data show that 15 judges retired early in 2023, compared with 26 in 2025.
The judiciary says the figures are not exceptional and cautions against drawing conclusions about individual retirement decisions. However, former judges and legal sources cite mounting workloads, burnout, stalled promotions, declining public standing, political attacks on the courts, and concerns over judicial independence as contributing factors.
Some departures involved health issues or judges approaching retirement age. Israeli judges retire at 70, compared with 67 for most workers, to preserve judicial independence and retain experienced professionals.
One retired judge warned that the unusually high number of retirees in their early 60s should set off alarm bells.
