As a result of the explosion, a 9-year-old boy was injured in the neck and his death was pronounced at the hospital. As part of an initial investigation, it became known that for reasons not yet fully understood, a fire broke out in a waste facility (recycling) while a large number of curious children gathered nearby, completely ignoring the danger posed by being close to a fire source. Shortly thereafter, while the group of children was nearby, an explosion occurred which caused the critical injury of a child who was nearby, apparently as a result of shrapnel flying towards him and hitting his neck. In light of this, there is suspicion that this may be a wrongful act in which minors in the city participated, during which they set fire to various types of trash cans and waited near them until the arrival of emergency and rescue forces, with the aim of observing their activity. Because of this, last night the commander of the Etzion station, Superintendent Rafi Vaknin, spoke with the mayor of Beitar Illit about joint public awareness and training activities that will begin these days with the aim of preventing another disaster. Alongside this, the Israel Police, together with the Fire and Rescue Services, continues to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
