Efforts Underway to Evacuate Israelis from Northern Ethiopia Amid Security Escalation
Dozens of Israelis are stranded in northern Ethiopia amid escalating security concerns, prompting urgent evacuation efforts and a travel warning.
Jerusalem, 27 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Efforts are underway on Sunday to evacuate Israelis stranded in Northern Ethiopia following a major security escalation, with Israel’s Foreign Ministry issuing an urgent travel warning for the region.
Dozens of Israelis remain stranded in Amhara and Tigray after militias and a rebel alliance seized key infrastructure.
Ethiopian Airlines has suspended flights to and from the northern airports of Mekelle, Axum and Shire. Roads across the region are considered highly dangerous, and communications disruptions and roadblocks complicate efforts to leave.
The Foreign Ministry urged Israelis in Tigray and Amhara to remain in secure buildings, minimize unnecessary movement, and avoid military facilities and gatherings. Israelis have also been warned not to attempt independent travel without confirming that routes are safe. Those in the affected areas have been asked to contact Israel’s Embassy in Addis Ababa and provide their location and contact details.
