Jerusalem, 16 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — International attention to the documentary “NZA,” winner of the jury prize at the Venice Film Festival, has surged in recent days largely because of Israel’s own sharp response, according to diplomatic sources and Israel’s Foreign Ministry.

Initially drawing limited exposure among festival attendees, the film became a leading international story after officials including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Culture Minister Miki Zohar, and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir publicly condemned it and floated legal action.

Foreign diplomats said the backlash, more than the film itself, drove global coverage. Outlets including The New York Times, Germany’s Süddeutsche Zeitung, and Britain’s Times and Telegraph shifted focus to proposed measures against filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, including moves to revoke their citizenship and accusations of “antisemitic incitement.”

Israel’s Foreign Ministry and IDF Spokesperson’s Unit are circulating messaging to embassies rejecting the film’s portrayal of IDF conduct in Gaza.
