Jerusalem, 4 November, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Israel’s Commission for Equal Rights of Persons with Disabilities has urged cabinet ministers to halt proposed reforms to disabled parking permit eligibility, warning the current plan risks disenfranchising vulnerable citizens.
While backing efforts to curb widespread permit fraud—which left 17% of Israeli private vehicles holding disability tags by late 2025 compared to a 5–7% global benchmark—the commission highlighted critical procedural flaws. Regulators criticized the lack of advocacy group consultation and demanded dedicated assessment tracks for non-allowance recipients, preserved permit validity during appeals, strict medical privacy protections, and non-digital application alternatives.
Commissioners urged Ministers Smotrich, Regev, and Levin to suspend implementation until safeguards guarantee uninterrupted accessible parking access for legitimate permit holders across the country.
