Lapid: Fund Defense Increase by Cutting Coalition Funds, Not Raising Taxes
Opposition leader Yair Lapid suggested cutting coalition funds and haredi support to increase defense spending, rejecting tax hikes.
Jerusalem, 14 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked opposition leader Yair Lapid during a security briefing to reopen the state budget to allocate additional funds to the defense establishment, according to a statement released by Lapid’s office.
According to the statement, Lapid expressed support for strengthening the Israel Defense Forces but opposed funding the increase through higher taxes on the middle class and reservists. He instead called for cutting coalition funds and billions of shekels allocated to support haredi men who do not serve in the military.
