Jerusalem, 8 October, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Supreme Court President Isaac Amit apologized on Thursday for remarks he made about smartphone use, which were interpreted as suggesting that Haredi Jews were hypocritical in their opposition to smartphones.

Amit reportedly made the comments during a discussion involving the Haredi community and its relationship with technology. The remarks drew criticism after they were understood as implying a gap between public religious standards and actual smartphone use among some Haredim.

Amit subsequently clarified his comments and apologized, saying he did not intend to offend the Haredi public or attribute hypocrisy to the community.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions between the judiciary and parts of the Haredi community over military service. Amit has also faced criticism from Haredi leaders and activists over his public statements concerning the rule of law and the government’s relationship with the judiciary.
