Jerusalem, 14 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has summoned opposition leader Yair Lapid to an urgent security briefing this afternoon, in an unusual meeting that will also include Deputy IDF Chief of Staff, Maj. Gen. Tamir Yadai.

The meeting is part of Netanyahu’s effort to secure broad opposition support for significant defense budget changes. The government wants to update the “numerator,” which tracks future expenditures, to provide additional funding for ongoing security needs and extraordinary wartime costs.

Yadai is expected to present Lapid with military data explaining the need for the increase. Because Israel is in an election period, changing the budget framework requires legislation and a Knesset vote.

Lapid and other opposition leaders have rejected similar requests, arguing that military needs should instead be funded by immediately cutting coalition funds, rather than expanding the budget framework.
