Jerusalem, 4 November, 2026 (TPS-IL) — A rift between Shin Bet chief David Zini and Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara has stalled the investigation into alleged foreign interference in Israel’s elections, Israeli media reported Wednesday.
Despite Central Elections Committee Chairman Justice Noam Sohlberg’s decision Sunday to involve police, the Shin Bet has not transferred investigative materials to police, provided new evidence to the attorney general, or initiated further investigative steps.
Sunday’s announcement followed an extended meeting at which officials agreed to continue working through a joint investigative team.
Zini reportedly wants to question Arab MKs Ahmad Tibi and Mansour Abbas, as well as Balad chairman Sami Abu Shehadeh, and classify the affair as a security-related investigation. Baharav-Miara has firmly opposed both moves.
The AG said public officials cannot be questioned without sufficient evidence, stressing that the rule of law requires an evidentiary basis for such investigations.
