Jerusalem, 2 November, 2026 (TPS-IL) — A dispute has erupted within Israel’s Shin Bet security agency over how to investigate suspected foreign interference in the recent elections, Israeli media reported Sunday night and Monday morning.
Shin Bet chief David Zini wants to expand the probe by deploying additional investigative tools, but three senior officials oppose the move, arguing that the suspicions do not justify such extensive measures.
The dissenters include the head of a department involved in the investigation and two other senior officials, who voiced their objections during an internal discussion. Their concerns center on doubts about the strength of evidence linking Qatar to money received by an MK from the predominantly Arab Joint List, allegedly used to finance the party’s election activities.
Investigators have yet to establish either the money’s origin or whether it funded illegal election activity.
