Jerusalem, 17 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas will not travel to New York for the UN General Assembly’s high-level week after the United States denied him entry. The Palestinians are responding by seeking a General Assembly resolution allowing Abbas to address the gathering through a prerecorded statement and participate remotely in other events.
The draft resolution, scheduled for a vote Thursday, would allow Abbas’s recorded speech to be broadcast during the general debate, introduced by a Palestinian representative in the hall. It would also permit him to participate by video or recorded statement in a conference on the two-state solution.
Other Palestinian officials unable to travel to New York would receive similar options.
Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon said Abbas cannot “keep paying and rewarding terrorists’ families” while expecting international doors to remain open to him.
