Jerusalem, 9 October, 2026 (TPS-IL) — More than 40 Palestinians staying in Israel illegally were arrested Friday in the Nazareth area during a major police operation targeting child begging on roads across Northern Israel.

Northern District police officers and Border Police fighters raided buildings, hiding places in open areas, and major intersections over the past two days. Many of those detained were minors, including children younger than 12, Israel’s age of criminal responsibility.

Police said all the suspects were taken to police stations for questioning. Following coordination with Palestinian Authority officials, the minors were transferred to Palestinian-controlled territory. Several adult suspects were arrested and brought before a court as police sought to extend their detention.

Authorities have focused on the use of minors in roadside begging, which raises concerns about their safety and the adults who may be exploiting them.
