Dozens Detained in Northern Towns Underage Marriage Crackdown
Police in Yavne’el, Northern District, detained 16 suspects in a crackdown on underage marriages within the town's closed community.
Jerusalem, 3 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Dozens of Northern District police officers raided several locations in Yavne’el in the Lower Galilee on Thursday morning, detaining 16 minors and adults for questioning over suspected involvement in recent underage marriages.
The raid was part of an ongoing police campaign against allegedly illegal marriages within the town’s small, closed community. Several weeks ago, more than 20 suspects were detained in a similar investigation.
Those detained Thursday are suspected of having recently married as minors or of making concrete preparations for illegal wedding ceremonies. According to police, such weddings are typically held in the morning before a small gathering, With the location kept secret until the ceremony begins and mobile phones banned to prevent documentation. A larger event is often held later under the guise of an “engagement party.”
Some girls in the community are reportedly married as young as 14 or 15.
