Israel Launches National AI Directorate

Jerusalem, 12 October, 2025 (TPS-IL) — Israel on Sunday appointed brig.-gen. (res.) erez Askal as Director of the new National Artificial Intelligence Directorate, to be established within the Prime Minister’s Office.

The initiative, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, aims to position Israel as a global AI superpower. The Directorate will craft and implement the national AI strategy, guide ministries on regulation, and develop infrastructure such as energy and research complexes to bolster domestic supercomputing capabilities.

Askal previously headed the IDF’s Digital Transformation Directorate and Unit 9900, and held senior intelligence roles in the Air Force and Military Intelligence Directorate.
