Number of Science Teachers in Israel Rises 42% Since 2011
Israel's science teaching staff has seen a significant 42% increase since 2011, reaching 15,949 teachers in the 2025-2026 academic year.
Jerusalem, 30 August, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics reported that in the 2025-2026 academic year, there were 15,949 science teaching staff members, up 2.3% from 15,587 the previous year and approximately 42% higher than the 11,241 recorded in 2011-2012.
Science teaching hours system-wide totaled approximately 223,000, compared to roughly 224,000 the previous year. Full-time equivalent positions in science teaching reached approximately 7,455, a 0.3% decrease from 7,479 the previous year but a 20% increase from approximately 6,197 in 2011-2012.
Between 2011-2012 and 2025-2026, the average number of students per science teacher dropped from approximately 155 to 127 in primary education and from 77 to 65 in middle school, while rising from 96 to 97 in high school.
