Jerusalem, 26 October, 2026 (TPS-IL) — A community delegation from Acre secured second place at the nationwide “Lighting Up Omer” hackathon after developing an initiative to combat youth drug and alcohol abuse.
The project—named in memory of Omer, a Tel Aviv teenager who died from drug abuse—brought together civic teams to design community-focused solutions.
Acre’s winning proposal equips parents with practical tools to identify early behavioral red flags, foster open family communication, and intervene before substance misuse escalates.
Led by community coordinator Kerem Bagdadi and six local female residents, the initiative focuses on strengthening parent-child relationships through proactive dialogue and trust-building, offering a scalable blueprint for municipal substance abuse prevention programs across Israel.
