Suspects Attempt to Exploit Yom Kippur Fast for Illegal Fishing, Two Caught
Israeli marine authorities caught two suspects illegally spear-fishing with a prohibited air compressor near Shavei Tzion during Yom Kippur.
Jerusalem, 22 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — HAIFA, Israel — Israeli marine authorities intercepted two suspects attempting to exploit the national Yom Kippur holiday to conduct illegal fishing off the northern coast, officials said.
In a joint operation, the Nature and Parks Authority (NPA) and Haifa Marine Police caught the pair near Shavei Tzion, located to the north of Haifa, spear-fishing with a prohibited surface-supplied air compressor.
The dangerous technique violates maritime safety and conservation regulations, authorities said.
The NPA opened seven investigation files over the holiday for offenses including drone fishing, net casting without licenses, and poaching in marine reserves. Enforcement teams also issued 14 fines for illegal beach driving.
Authorities emphasized joint patrols with law enforcement will continue to protect marine ecosystems.
