Jerusalem, 15 October, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Israel recorded 35 drowning deaths at its beaches during the 2026 bathing season, up from 31 in 2025, according to Interior Ministry data released Thursday. The season ran from April 9 to October 10, opening earlier than usual due to security restrictions.

Twenty victims drowned at beaches officially closed to swimming, while only five died at designated beaches during lifeguard hours. The Mediterranean Sea accounted for 31 fatalities, with the remainder occurring in the Red Sea, Sea of Galilee and Dead Sea.

Israel operated 160 designated bathing beaches this season. The ministry allocated NIS 35.5 million ($11.8 million) this year to improve beach infrastructure, accessibility and safety. The next bathing season is expected to open in April 2027.
