Jerusalem, 15 October, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that he spoke directly with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa following Israeli strikes on the Syrian Defense Ministry and near the presidential palace in Damascus in July 2025.

Speaking at a Likud meeting with Druze leaders in northern Israel, Netanyahu said the conversation helped stop the killing of Druze in southern Syria.

“I picked up the phone to Sharaa. It was a very short, very sharp conversation, and the massacre stopped,” Netanyahu said.

He pledged to continue protecting the Druze community, adding, “I will do whatever is necessary to protect our brothers, your brothers and our brothers.”

The remarks come amid ongoing discussions between Israel and Syria over a potential security agreement following the ouster of Bashar al-Assad in late 2024.
