Israel Deploys Worlds Longest Seismic Fiber-Optic Cable in Dead Sea
Israel has deployed the world's longest seismic fiber-optic cable, 55 km long, in the Dead Sea to improve earthquake warning systems.
Jerusalem, 8 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Researchers have deployed a 55-kilometer fiber-optic cable along the floor of the Dead Sea, marking the world’s longest cable dedicated entirely to seismology and the first such deployment in a hypersaline environment. The project addresses a gap in Israel’s national earthquake warning system, whose monitoring stations are currently all land-based, leaving the Dead Sea floor unmonitored.
Using Distributed Acoustic Sensing technology, the cable functions as an ultra-sensitive seismic sensor capable of detecting micro-seismic activity and mapping underwater fault lines.
the Dead Sea Transform, Israel’s most active fault system, has historically produced major earthquakes roughly every 100 years, with the last significant one in 1927, raising long-standing concern among scientists about the region’s earthquake risk.
