TPS: Israels Roads Empty Out Ahead of Yom Kippur
As Yom Kippur approaches, Israel's roads are emptying, with police deploying thousands nationwide to manage increased pedestrian and cyclist activity.
Jerusalem, 20 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Israel’s roads are rapidly emptying as the country prepares for Yom Kippur, which begins Sunday evening and ends Monday evening.
Vehicle traffic is expected to drop sharply as millions of Israelis observe the Day of Atonement, with many roads becoming largely free of cars and increasingly filled with pedestrians and cyclists. Police have deployed thousands of officers, soldiers and volunteers nationwide, with special attention to major roads, populated areas and locations where large numbers of people are expected to gather.
Traffic police will continue operating on intercity roads, while emergency and security vehicles will remain active throughout the fast. Police are urging cyclists and pedestrians to remain alert, wear protective equipment and keep roads clear for emergency vehicles.
Public transportation is also winding down ahead of the holiday, with Israel Railways operating until 1 p.m. Sunday before services resume Tuesday.
