Negev Institute Warns Local Hostiles Could Shut Down Air Force Bases
A report from the Rifman Institute warns Israeli Air Force bases in the Negev, like Nevatim, could be shut down by local threats and Iranian intelligence.
Jerusalem, 29 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — A new report by the Rifman Institute for the Development of the Negev, prepared with former senior security officials, warns that Israeli Air Force bases in the Negev could face a scenario in which their operations are disrupted during a major conflict.
The report focuses on three converging threats: an estimated 100,000–130,000 illegal weapons in the region, extremist activity, and Iranian intelligence operations. It highlights Nevatim Air Base, which hosts F-35 fighter squadrons and heavy transport aircraft, as particularly vulnerable.
The report cites previous incidents, including gunfire that entered the base and damaged an aircraft wing, drone incursions, and the arrest of a Negev resident accused of gathering intelligence for Iran.
It warns that road blockades, gunfire, drones, or attacks on parked aircraft could temporarily halt sorties. The institute recommends establishing a designated “Nevatim Envelope” security zone around strategic Negev facilities.
