Herzog: I Intend to Be a Teacher After Presidency

By Pesach Benson • September 1, 2026

Jerusalem, 1 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — President Isaac Herzog said Tuesday that he intends to become a teacher after completing his term as president, as he joined students in northern Israel for the opening of the school year.

“Teaching is a glorious, great, and very honorable profession, and I have already announced that when I end my term as President of the State, I intend to be a teacher,” Herzog said during a visit to Gvanim Elementary School at Kibbutz Ein Hamifratz.

Herzog’s seven-year term ends in July 2028.

Herzog and his wife Michal spoke about the security challenges facing northern communities and called for peace. “You deserve peace and our children deserve peace,” Herzog said, addressing Lebanon’s children and calling for Hezbollah to leave the area.

The President and First Lady also released a red balloon for the safe return of Haymanot Kasau, a then-nine-year-old Ethiopian girl who disappeared from an immigration absorption center in Safed in 2024. The family had called on Israeli children to bring a red balloon — an international symbol of kidnapped children — to school.
