Jerusalem, 12 October, 2026 (TPS-IL) — A senior local government official in central Israel, his wife and the head of a municipal economic development company were among 24 people arrested or detained Monday in a corruption investigation involving alleged cash bribes, rigged public tenders and suspected links to criminal networks.

The arrests followed more than a year of covert investigative work by the Israel Police’s Lahav 433 fraud investigations unit. The case involves suspected bribery, fraud, breach of trust, money laundering and tax offenses.

Police suspect the head of the local authority and the company’s chief executive used their positions to steer lucrative public contracts to favored businesspeople in exchange for payments, most of which were allegedly made in cash. Investigators also suspect the official’s wife played a role in the arrangement.

The case has raised concerns about possible links between public corruption and organized crime. According to police, criminal figures from central Israel were involved in the suspected scheme, directly or indirectly, over an extended period. They allegedly helped facilitate arrangements involving public tenders and were also linked to acts of violence.

As the investigation became public Monday, police arrested 17 suspects, including the local authority head, his wife, the company executive and several businesspeople. Seven others were detained for questioning.

Officers searched offices and commercial premises, seizing money and other property as they gathered evidence. The suspects were taken to Lahav 433 for questioning. Police said they would seek court approval to extend detention where necessary at the Rishon LeZion Magistrate’s Court.

The case comes amid broader scrutiny of alleged misconduct in local government. In June, the deputy mayor of Nahariya, senior municipal officials, contractors and alleged organized crime figures were arrested in a separate corruption investigation.

No charges have been reported in the current case, and the allegations remain under investigation.
