Jerusalem, 6 October, 2026 (TPS-IL) — An Israeli citizen arriving in Minsk from Tel Aviv was caught carrying approximately $33,000 in cash without declaring it to Belarusian customs, Israeli media reported on Tuesday. The passenger passed through the green customs channel, indicating he had nothing to declare, but officers discovered the money in different currencies inside his luggage.
Belarusian authorities said the amount was more than three times the legal limit that can be carried across the border without a written declaration. Travelers carrying cash equivalent to $10,000 or more must declare it and use the red channel.
A criminal case was launched against the Israeli under Article 228, Part 2 of Belarus’s Criminal Code for illegally transferring a large amount of cash across the customs border. The offense carries a potential sentence of up to five years in prison, along with confiscation of the money.
