Political Candidate Delivers Sharp Threat to Toll Highway 6 Concessionaires
Prof. Yaron Zelekha warns Israel's Highway 6 operators of concession expiration and potential financial restitution if appointed Finance Minister.
Jerusalem, 4 October, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Prof. Yaron Zelekha, who is seeking the Finance Ministry after the October 27 election, issued a warning on Sunday to the operators of Israel’s Highway 6, the country’s only toll road, over what he called excessive fines imposed on drivers.
Zelekha said the highway operator is a regional monopoly and must comply with competition laws. He argued that collection costs have fallen significantly since the toll system was established nearly three decades ago, making the current charges unjustified.
Zelekha pledged that if he is appointed finance minister, he would allow the concession to expire in 2032 without further extension, returning the highway to the public for free use.
He also threatened to establish an investigative commission to examine the charges and potentially require the operator to return money collected from drivers. “You’ve been warned,” Zelekha said.
