Knesset Speaker Ohana Refuses to Convene Special Recess Session
Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana declined a special recess session requested by 25 MKs concerning the Supreme Court's power over legislation, citing improper.
Jerusalem, 25 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana has not scheduled a special recess session despite a request signed by 25 members of Knesset.
The proposed session would consider a Knesset resolution asserting that the Supreme Court lacks authority to cancel, freeze or delay legislation passed by parliament.
The issue has gained renewed attention after Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara asked the Supreme Court to freeze the Broadcasting Law pending petitions against it. Ohana’s office said the request was improperly submitted because it had been filed by Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi, who is a minister. Knesset rules require such a request to be submitted by a member of Knesset who is not a minister and carry 25 signatures from MKs who are not ministers or deputy ministers.
The office said the request can be corrected and resubmitted in accordance with the rules.
