Circle Closed: Slain Northern Gaza Commander Oversaw Captivity of Israeli Hostages
Hamas Northern Gaza Commander Izz al-Din Beik, eliminated Tuesday, oversaw captivity of Israeli hostages including Mia Schem, Hisham al-Sayed, and Shani Louk.
Jerusalem, 2 October, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Following an extensive intelligence investigation, the IDF and Shin Bet revealed on Friday that Izz al-Din Beik, commander of Hamas’s Northern Gaza Brigade, who was eliminated Tuesday, oversaw the captivity of Israeli hostages during the war.
Before he was appointed brigade commander during Operation Iron Swords, Beik served as commander of the Western Jabaliya Battalion and as the brigade’s head of military intelligence. He helped establish Hamas’s Nukhba forces in northern Gaza and promoted and financed numerous attacks against Israeli civilians. He also commanded and participated in the October 7 invasion of Israel.
During the war, Beik was responsible for holding numerous hostages, including Mia Schem, Hisham al-Sayed, Amit Buskila, Shani Louk, Ron Benjamin, and others, many of whom were murdered in captivity.
The IDF and Shin Bet described his elimination as an important closing of the circle, pledging continued action against October 7 perpetrators.
