Border Police Marks 30 Years Since First Female Combatants Joined Ranks
Israel's Border Police commemorates 30 years since its first female combatants joined, marking a pioneering step in opening combat roles to women.
Jerusalem, 3 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Israel’s Border Police held a commemorative assembly marking 30 years since the induction of its first cohort of female combatants, a groundbreaking step that made the Border Police the first service branch to open combat roles to women.
Thirty years ago, 26 female combatants in the inaugural cohort volunteered for combat service. Since then, women have come to serve in nearly all Border Police roles, now accounting for nearly 45% of all trainees in the corps’ combat training programs.
The assembly featured stories of female combatants and commanders across generations, from the pioneers who paved the way to current commanders deployed across all Border Police sectors, alongside a memorial service honoring 17 female Border Police combatants who fell in the line of duty over the past three decades.
