Insurance Giant Cuts Nursing-Care to 83-Year-Old, Claiming His Condition Improved
Harel Insurance has ceased nursing-care payments to an 83-year-old man in Israel, claiming his condition improved, prompting legal action from his attorneys.
Jerusalem, 27 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Insurance giant Harel stopped paying nursing-care benefits to an 83-year-old man after a new assessment determined that his condition had “improved,” Israeli media reported Sunday. The man, identified as S., lives in a northern kibbutz and has suffered from serious orthopedic problems, chronic pain, diabetes, dizziness, weakness, falls and incontinence.
In February 2024, Israel’s National Insurance Institute determined that S. required assistance with daily activities. Harel subsequently recognized him as requiring nursing care and began paying NIS 3,200 ($1,049.85) a month.
Two additional assessments by Harel-appointed experts, conducted over nearly two years, also found that S. remained eligible for benefits. But in April 2026, a new assessment concluded that he needed assistance only with dressing and bathing, and Harel ended the payments.
His attorneys argue that his medical and functional condition had not materially improved and have filed a lawsuit seeking renewed benefits and additional compensation. Harel refused to comment.
