Jerusalem, 6 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — The Health Ministry has updated its recommendations following confirmation of another case of infection with the Naegleria fowleri amoeba in the Sea of Galilee.
The ministry advises swimmers to avoid diving, dipping their heads underwater, or activities that could force water into the nose. Nose plugs are recommended. Swimmers should also avoid digging into or stirring up the bottom in shallow areas, where the amoeba may be more concentrated.
The infection is extremely rare but severe and potentially life-threatening. It occurs when contaminated water enters through the nose, not transmitted by drinking water or from person to person.
People who feel well after swimming do not need medical evaluation. However, anyone who develops sudden fever, severe headache, nausea, vomiting, stiff neck, confusion, unusual drowsiness, or changes in consciousness should seek immediate emergency care.
Since 2022, four Cases of Naegleria fowleri have been diagnosed in Israel.
