Municipal Employee Arrested in North Suspected of Wiretapping Council Leaders Office

Jerusalem, 23 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — TIBERIAS, Israel — A 65-year-old municipal employee from Jish – a small Arab town in the Upper Galilee – was arrested on Suspicion of installing illegal wiretapping equipment inside a northern council leader’s office, Israeli police announced Wednesday.
The arrest, said authorities, followed a covert probe by the Northern District Fraud Unit after local council officials reported suspected covert listening devices. Investigators working alongside council staff uncovered evidence corroborating the breach. Officers raided the municipal offices immediately following a meeting, taking the suspect into custody with incriminating evidence in his possession.
Police are requesting a remand extension at the Tiberias Magistrate’s Court to maintain custody as the investigation continues into potential espionage and privacy violations within local governance.
