Jerusalem, 28 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Israel’s Foreign Ministry summoned Spain’s Chargé d’Affaires, Francisca Pedrós, on Monday to protest comments by Spanish Youth Minister Sira Rego, the ministry said.
The ministry said Rego had declared that the Spanish public supports a Palestinian state “from the river to the sea,” a slogan the ministry said implies “the erasure of the State of Israel.”
The Foreign Ministry accused the Spanish government, led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, of pursuing what it called a “systematic anti-Israel policy.”
It also criticized Rego for previously declining to condemn the Hamas massacre on Oct. 7, 2023, and noted that she was barred from entering Israel in September 2025.
“The Spanish government has lost its moral compass,” the Foreign Ministry said, accusing Madrid of turning Israel into “a punching bag for its foreign policy.”
The ministry also accused Spain Of supporting a vision that “entails the destruction of the State of Israel” while criticizing Israel’s right to defend itself against Iran and Hamas.
