Jerusalem, 31 August, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Police arrested a resident of southern Israel in his 40s on suspicion of involvement in a case involving baby fruit purees contaminated with anesthetic substances.
An investigation into additional suspects is ongoing.
In mid-June 2026, at least four to five toddlers (ages 1-3) were hospitalized at Hadassah Ein Kerem Medical Center in Jerusalem after showing symptoms of confusion, weakness and apathy.
The toddlers had all consumed fruit puree from the brand “Prinok,” purchased as individual jars (not as part of a package) at two branches of the “Zol U’Begadol” discount supermarket chain in Jerusalem.
Blood tests found traces of benzodiazepines — specifically clonazepam and lorazepam — sedative medications normally used in adult anti-anxiety treatment (brand names like Valium and Clonex), not substances that belong in baby food.
