Police Bust Illegal Camel Race at Military Training Ground in the Negev
Israeli police disrupted an illegal camel race at a Negev military firing zone, detaining two minors and seizing a camel amid safety concerns.
Jerusalem, 25 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Israeli police thwarted an illegal camel race early Friday morning at a military firing zone in the Negev, near Route 222 and the Bir Hadaj area.
Southern District police moved in during the early preparations after receiving targeted intelligence about plans for the race. When officers arrived, they found vehicles, carts and participants beginning to gather at the site.
Police detained two minors for questioning after they attempted to flee and hide in bushes near one of the camels. Officers also seized their camel.
Authorities said illegal camel races in IDF firing zones pose serious safety and security risks. Such events can also involve dangerous off-road driving, illegal gambling, gunfire, and animal-welfare violations.
Police said the operation prevented the race from taking place and disrupted the gathering before the event could begin. The investigation into those involved continues.
