Baby Food Poisoning Suspect Named; Lawyer Says He Has Bipolar Disorder

Jerusalem, 2 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — A southern Israeli man in his 40s has been identified as the suspect in an alleged attempt to poison baby food products by adding sedatives to Prinok-brand fruit purées, police said.

Yan Shamala is suspected of deliberately contaminating the purées with the drugs in June.

Two babies were hospitalized after being fed the poisoned puree.

The Health Ministry confirmed the puree was laced with the sedatives clonazepam and lorazepam. Both are prescription medications.

Shamala’s lawyer told the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court that he has bipolar disorder. He was subsequently sent for a psychiatric evaluation, which found him fit to remain in detention.
