Christian Messianic Group Shuts Down Jerusalem Caf on Saturdays
Jerusalem's Café BaSimta will close Saturdays after two months of Haredi protests, which included property damage, to de-escalate tensions.
Jerusalem, 3 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — After about two months of Haredi demonstrations every Shabbat, the management of Café BaSimta in Jerusalem announced it would be closed on Saturdays.
“We reached the decision after lengthy deliberation and with heavy hearts, in an effort to prevent further escalation, lower tensions, and restore peace and quiet to the café,” the management said.
The café opened in an area where most businesses close on Shabbat. The demonstrations turned violent, with protesters allegedly damaging property, overturning tables, trying to break into the café, putting glue in its locks, and throwing eggs, stones, and even feces.
The café owners are members of the Jews for Jesus organization.
