Jerusalem, 3 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Central Elections Committee Chairman Justice Noam Sohlberg ruled Thursday that a Member of Knesset who publicly announces intent to run for a different party in the upcoming elections is considered to have resigned from his faction, and must therefore resign from the Knesset shortly afterward in order to run on that party’s slate.
An exception applies if the MK’s faction explicitly agrees to the move in writing within 90 days before the elections, provided the MK continues abiding by factional discipline — in which case he would not be considered to have resigned and would not need to step down from the Knesset.
The ruling forms part of an advisory opinion to be submitted to the Central Elections Committee plenum should MK Eitan Ginzburg not resign from his post.
