Jerusalem, 16 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Israel’s Privacy Protection Authority imposed a 64,000 shekel (about $17,000) fine on the Beit Shemesh Municipality following an investigation into a data security breach in its Geographic Information System, which exposed sensitive personal and medical information belonging to approximately 4,600 residents.
The Authority found the municipality violated Israel’s 2017 Privacy Protection Regulations after a system fault, reported in August 2025, made welfare data intended for internal use accessible through the municipal website.
The system was shut down and access blocked once the breach was discovered. The case highlights growing regulatory scrutiny of municipal data security practices in Israel.
