Jerusalem, 25 August, 2026 (TPS-IL) — The University of Haifa is facing an annual deficit of about $20 million and is preparing a financial recovery plan. The university has agreed to cut $54 million over the next four years.
Last week, 170 of its 1,200 non-tenured lecturers were told they could be dismissed or have their hours reduced.
The Council for Higher Education says the deficit is mainly due to two factors. First, the university’s pension reserves have been exhausted, resulting in an annual shortfall of $14 million.
Second, a new research funding system is expected to cost the university an additional $5.3 million per year. The old system favored universities focused on natural sciences and engineering.
