Jerusalem, 10 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Yan Shemla, 41, from Beersheba, is the main suspect in a case involving the alleged injection of dangerous sedatives into fruit purées for babies sold under the Prinuk brand. A prosecutor’s statement was filed against him on Thursday, ahead of an indictment.
He is suspected of using poison with the intent to endanger human life, negligent handling of medications, theft and drug offenses.
Shemlah’s lawyer said he suffers from bipolar disorder, but a psychiatric evaluation found him fit to remain in custody and stand trial.
According to the allegations, Shemla took Baby Food purées from branches of a supermarket chain in Jerusalem, injected them with sedatives and returned them to the shelves for sale to the public. Police have security-camera footage allegedly showing him placing the products on supermarket shelves.
Investigators are examining possible involvement by another person.
