Jerusalem, 22 September, 2026 (TPS-IL) — Haredi entrepreneur Daniel Verdiger is acquiring 11 City Market supermarket branches in a deal valued at approximately NIS 35 million ($11.6 million), after being fired by retail giant Shufersal, according to Israeli media reports.
Verdiger, from Ashdod, is purchasing the branches as part of a move expected to significantly expand his presence in Israel’s retail food market. The deal includes supermarkets operating in several cities and is described as one of the more notable recent transactions in the local grocery sector.
Verdiger previously worked for Shufersal but was dismissed from the company. He later developed his own business activities and built a growing presence in the supermarket industry.
The acquisition is expected to create a larger retail chain under Verdiger’s ownership and could increase competition in the highly competitive Israeli grocery market.
The transaction remains subject to completion of the necessary approvals and conditions.
